JAN 24 - FEB 18, 2015
OPENING EVENT: SATURDAY, JAN 24TH, 5-8 PM
Pacific Sky Exhibitions is pleased to welcome Avantika Bawa's project Measuring Blue with a collaborative writing contribution by Erin Moore creating new avenues of discourse around the visual material presented in our exhibition venue. An opening reception will be held on Saturday January 24, and the exhibition will run through February 18, 2015.
Avantika Bawa's Measuring Blue uses the interior architecture of Pacific Sky Exhibitions as a prompt to generate a series of drawings on wall and paper. The width and direction of each wall is used to determine the choice of specific blue tones for each drawing and a color scheme for the lines connecting them. These formal drawings reflect space and scale, expressed through color and shape.
Avantika Bawa is an artist, curator, and academic. She has an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1998) and a BFA in the same from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India (1995). She has participated in the Skowhegan, MacDowell, Jentel, Vermont Studio Center, Kochi Biennial Foundation and Djerassi residencies.
Noteworthy solo exhibits include shows at; Schneider Museum (Ashland OR), Suyama Space (Seattle, WA), The Columbus Museum (GA); Saltworks Gallery and the Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center (Atlanta, GA); Nature Morte and Gallery Maskara (India); and Disjecta (Portland OR). She was part of the South by East Biennial (Boca Raton, FL) and juried group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art (GA), The Drawing Center and Smack Mellon (NY). Her work has been reviewed in international publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Art Papers, Art Lies, Art India, Art Asia Pacific, The Oregonian, and The Times of India amongst others.
